From a company standpoint it depends on how long you plan to host the site. For example, if the site relates to an event that will be over in three months even a year is enough. But if you plan to use the site as a company interface the longer you book it for the more secure your online brand will be.

From an SEO standpoint, most search sites add value to your site based on how long you have been online and how much time your domain is booked for. Since there is vey little you can do about the commencement date of your site you could book it for a longer period to provide SEO benefits.
